Our Vision
Cultivating a diverse community of disciples…
In a divided city and world, cultivating a diverse community (in age, economics, race, story, etc.) is hard work. Our community is a community of disciples — people whose unity is rooted in learning from and following Jesus. This is a vision we approach soberly but intentionally, full of faith that God loves to accomplish things that are too big to do without him.
…who belong to Jesus…
We can only be a diverse community of disciples if we belong to Jesus. The things we aim for in our vision only matter if God’s aim is realized in us — that we belong to him. This means we are trusting the Gospel and its power to accomplish this mission. This means we are learning to find our home in Jesus and his church.
…and seek the good of Birmingham.
The best thing we can offer Birmingham is a beautiful, living, diverse church which belongs to Jesus. We are a beacon of hope, a place for the broken, and a group of disciples eager to make a good difference in this place. Whether we are sharing the gospel, making disciples, protesting what is evil, or acting in kindness and civility in a raging culture, we are to pursue goodness-in-action with all the power and responsibility the Lord has entrusted to us.
Our Values
Truth of the Gospel
We value the Scriptures and build our church around it. We preach from the Bible, build our ministries on the Gospel, and fill our liturgy with God’s Word.
Beautiful Disciple-Makers
We value people as our greatest asset! When we see people as God sees them, we are able to make unique disciples that last, not cheap replicas.
Diverse Fellowship
We value all people, and believe in pursuing reconciliation, justice, and crossing worldly lines in order to have a unified, multi-cultural church.
Relational Integrity with Sacrifice
We value pursuing lives that are grace-filled and truthful in both public and private, and we give away our time, talent, and treasures.
Goodness & Multiplication in Word and Deed
We value good news and good acts done in love as a balm to a weak and weary city and world.
Our Core Beliefs
Scripture
God wrote the Bible through men and without error. (2 Peter 1:21)
Trinity
God exists eternally in a Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. (2 Corinthians 13:14)
Jesus
Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He became a man, lived a sinless life, died on a cross, was buried, rose bodily from the grave, and ascended into Heaven to redeem sinful people. (Hebrews 1:3)
The Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is the supernatural agent who applies salvation to sinful people, regenerating, indwelling, sanctifying, and sealing them until the day of Christ’s return. (John 15:26)
Humanity
God creates all people in His image as uniquely male and female. (Genesis 1:27)
Salvation
All people are sinful and in need of salvation. Salvation is a gift of God, given by grace alone, and received by personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 2:8)
The Church
The church is both universal and local. (Acts 2:42)
Restoration
Jesus will return to earth to judge all people and to rule and reign with his saints forever. (Matthew 25:46)
Additionally, we agree with the confessional statement of The Gospel Coalition.
