Citizens’ heartbeat is a big gospel that loves, transforms, and brings hope to broken people and places.

Our Core Values

In a world full of information, people are still starving for the truth. Jesus is the only truth that sets us free from sin and makes us new creations. We believe the church must be formed and fueled by the Word of God, or else be lost to the whims and winds of cultural shifts and pressure. Therefore, Citizens will be a theologically driven church expressed by these commitments:

BIBLICAL FIDELITY: the Word of God is central and forms our theology.

EXPOSITORY PREACHING, alongside Word-saturated liturgy orients our Sunday gatherings.

GOSPEL-CENTRALITY in our teaching, discipleship, catechesis, and spiritual disciplines.

In a divided world and a divided Birmingham, we believe that the church, “our fellowship of differents,” should shine as an example of love, forgiveness, and friendship to the watching world. Citizens will pursue diversity by intentionally listening, embracing, and making space for all people. This means welcoming and valuing people of different socioeconomic backgrounds, races, generations and fostering an environment where both men and women can flourish. Cultivating this culture will require both breaking down sinful barriers like racism and building bridges of understanding among our people. Furthermore, to hold our diversity beautifully, we must be historically rooted together with unity in orthodox theology and reliance on biblical spiritual fruits of ever-growing Christian maturity. Therefore, Citizens will be a diverse and historically rooted church expressed by these commitments:

UNITY in theology, tradition, and commitments—yet, unity is not uniformity.

DIVERSITY in people, passions, and even political persuasions.

MATURITY through dedicated community life, a thorough membership process, and holistic discipleship.

In a confused culture, Citizens seeks to bring goodness to every resident of Birmingham and beyond. We will live “sent” to every area of life: our homes, our workplaces, our neighborhoods, wherever there is need, and onward to the nations. Accordingly, we will be intentional about meaningful membership, missional living, and multiplication. We will be dogmatic in the training of leaders, deacons, elders, church planters, and missionaries, believing that gospel lived as a healthy church is our greatest gift to a lost world. Therefore, Citizens seeks to be right in our presence as a people — not just right on paper — so goodness will be expressed in these commitments:

GOSPEL FLUENCY to live out the gospel as both radical proclamation and sacrificial demonstration.

PROTEST AND LAMENT to love what is good and hate what is evil as we push back this fallen world.

CULTURE OF KINDNESS living with civility, thoughtfulness, generosity, and compassion.

Our Core Beliefs

God wrote the Bible through men and without error. (2 Peter 1:21)

God exists eternally in a Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. (2 Corinthians 13:14)

Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He became a man, lived a sinless life, died on a cross, was buried, rose bodily from the grave, and ascended into Heaven to redeem sinful people. (Hebrews 1:3)

The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is the supernatural agent who applies salvation to sinful people, regenerating, indwelling, sanctifying, and sealing them until the day of Christ’s return. (John 15:26)

God creates all people in His image as uniquely male and female. (Genesis 1:27)

All people are sinful and in need of salvation. Salvation is a gift of God, given by grace alone, and received by personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 2:8)

The Church

The church is both universal and local. (Acts 2:42)

Jesus will return to earth to judge all people and to rule and reign with his saints forever. (Matthew 25:46)
